A Short History of the Friends of Pelaw Wood

Why was the group set up

The Friends of Pelaw Wood was formed in September 2003 to work voluntarily after a group of local residents had come together a year earlier in a working half-day to remove a lorry load of litter from the Wood and it seemed right that we should do more for this lovely resource for Gilesgate and Durham. Since then The Friends, with some assistance from the County Durham Rangers and the County’s Parish Paths Partnership, have improved footpaths, built steps, cleared rubbish, planted trees and encouraged wildflowers to enhance the Wood.

The group is affiliated to and insured through The Conservation Volunteers.
